Sounding the Future examines the unique gamut of creative possibility presented through sound: a vital yet often overshadowed component of sensory experience.
Curated by Sydney-based sound artist, Gail Priest, Sounding the Future offers audiences sonic potentials, which she describes as “ranging from almost-here transhuman medications to far-future post-Anthropocene aftermaths, with some apocalyptic contingencies in between.”
Artists participating in the exhibition, including Pia van Gelder (UNSW Art & Design) and Tom Smith (UNSW Art & Design), Peter Blamey, and George Poonkhin Khut (UNSW Art & Design) acknowledge the dominance of sight as a sensory perception but invite audiences to consider the power of sound in its own right – its presence, its absence, and the prospect of its dimensions in a post-human world.
Exhibiting artists have asked themselves how sound art can it help people more deeply consider the relationship between human activity and the future of the planet. According to Priest, Sounding the Future presents “dreams of future soundings”.
