Shingo Takeuchi: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics
UNSW Art & Design graduates Alison Groves and Ion Fukazawa have curated a selection of contemporary artist Shingo Takeuchi's renowned stoneware ceramic work for his premiere exhibition in Sydney at ADspace.
Shingo Takeuchi was born in 1955, in Seto, one of the oldest ceramic capitals of Japan. Over his 30 year career Takeuchi’s work has been exhibited at major international ceramic biennales and exhibitions, and features in numerous private and public collections including the Seto Museum, The Korean International Ceramics Foundation Collection, and Yingge Ceramics Museum Taiwan.
Both organic and geometric, Takeuchi’s ceramics present a dramatic illusion of form and process. The vessels are balanced in earthy patterning and bold labyrinthine arcs, calling to mind the almost-born states of seeds and eggs: the hollows of the vessels seeming to have pushed at their borders and spiraled into being.
Takeuchi’s mastery of hand building and reduction cooling have carved out a distinct formal identity for his practice in contemporary Japanese ceramics.
This exhibition is supported by a Local Grant from the the Japan Foundation.
