As part of its major Romancing the Skull exhibition, the Art Gallery of Ballarat is the first Australian public art museum to present UNSW Art & Design alum and international contemporary artist Shaun Gladwell's groundbreaking virtual reality (VR) work, Orbital Vanitas.
The skull has entranced and fascinated generations of artists. Romancing the Skull surveys depictions of the skull in art and examines why we continue to be so fascinated with this transfixing symbol. The exhibition explores a range of themes including the skull as a reminder of our mortality, the use of the skull in addressing social and political issues, and the skull and crossbones as a symbol of piracy and rebellion.
Describing his VR work in The New York Times earlier this year Galdwell said; 'I imagined the skull approaching and then engulfing you, as if it were the mysterious surviving fragment of a lost science fiction film.'
If you are visiting Ballarat, exploration of Galdwell's work is free with exhibition entry, however it is essential to book a timed ticket to experience Orbital Vanitas.
Please note for practical reasons, this experience may not be available for group bookings.
