Extended Q&A: Soda_Jerk
- When 7 Jun - 7 Jun 2018
Vivid Ideas and the Sydney Film Festival (SFF) present the opportunity to meet Australian artists Soda_Jerk after the screening of their sold-out film TERROR NULLIUS.
Formed in Sydney in 2002, Soda_Jerk is a two-person art collective that approaches sampling as a form of rogue historiography. Working at the intersection of documentary and speculative fiction, their archival practice takes the form of films, video installations, cut-up texts and lecture performances.
Equal parts political satire, eco-horror and road movie, TERROR NULLIUS is a rogue remapping of national mythology, where a misogynistic remark is met with the sharp beak of a bird, feminist bike gangs rampage and bicentenary celebrations are ravaged by flesh-eating sheep.
By intricately remixing fragments of Australia's pop culture and film legacy, TERROR NULLIUS interrogates the unstable entanglement of fiction that underpins this country's vexed sense of self.
Following the success of The Was, their 2016 collaboration with The Avalanches, Soda_Jerk return with a work that’s dark, hopeful, irreverent and urgent.
TERROR NULLIUS is not suitable for children. Parental guidance is recommended. It contains adult themes, sexual content and strong violence.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors are advised that TERROR NULLIUS may contain images and voices of people who have died.
Consisting of UNSW Art & Design graduates Soda_Jerk have collaborated with Australian collectives The Avalanches and VNS Matrix. Soda_Jerk's work has featured in major solo exhibitions at leading international institutions and events including; Videotage, Hong Kong; the National Museum for Women in the Arts, Washington DC; Anthology Film Archives, New York and Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin. Their multi-channel video installations have recently been presented at the Barbican Centre, London; Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff; Hartware Medien KunstVerein, Dortmund; Onassis Cultural Centre, Athens and Pioneer Works, New York.
