Curated by members of UNSW’s Sound, Energies and Environments research group, the Black Box Series is a bi-monthly events showcasing a diverse range of artists working with and around sound.
These early evening performance-focused events present exciting new and experimental works from both emerging, established, local and visiting artists engaged in the expanded domain of contemporary sound practice. This month’s performances are by:
Live performance of music from the album Traced, due for release on Sonic Pieces, June 2017 + Live performance by the Browser Duo (Guffond/Morandini) exploring the chrome extension Listening Back as an instrument. Listening Back translates internet cookies into sound as you browse online.
Jasmine Guffond is a sound artist and composer working at the interface of social, political and technical infrastructures. Her practice spans live performance, recording and the capacity of sound installation to interrogate site. Through the sonification of data she addresses the potential of sound to engage with contemporary political questions. More.
Tom will be performing a work entitled Topoi Koinoi, developed for a recent exhibition at Alaska Projects.
Tom Smith is a Sydney based artist, curator and musician. His current interests include the tyranny and poetics of the generic, aesthetic standardisation in music production, and the emancipatory potential of default media platforms. His work includes curatorial projects, experimental performance works, and electronic music. More.
Del Lumanta (GAS) is an artist and musician from Sydney. She has exhibited in Sydney and Melbourne, including recent shows at 55 Sydenham Rd and Knulp. She plays in experimental synth duo Video Ezy and currently directs Double Vision, a series of free-form gigs showcasing the practice of DIY, sound and 'other' musicians. More.
Raised in the Australian countryside, Ry stumbled into Sydney’s hot and heavy dance music scene from the left fields of jazz and electronica. Host of the radio program and podcast Fear of Music on UNSW Blitz and gaining DJ chops in the backyards, basements and living rooms of Sydney. Ry attempts to draw links between musical histories and styles as a musician, DJ and record collector. One foot grounded in a dusty, soulful history and another in a funky, synthetic future. More.
