UNSW Art & Design is hosting free hands-on studio workshops for high school students during the April holidays.
The workshops provide creative students like you with the opportunity to pick up skills, advice and guidance from UNSW's team of leading artists, designers and media creators.
As part of the workshop take a campus tour and gain insights into the future of creativity, career pathways and a sense of what student life is like as part of our unique art and design campus community.
All workshops run for two hours and are followed by a one hour campus tour.
All participants must be aged over 15 years.
Students participating in the Jewellery, Sculpture and Textile workshops should not wear loose or flowing clothing, must have long hair tied back and wear closed-toe shoes.
This workshop is a fun introduction to the world of graphic design. Lecturer and graphic and digital designer Stephen Goddard will guide you through the design process, from sketching an idea to designing a book cover using InDesign. You will learn the essentials - how to create a file, produce type and how to use image and colour.
Monday, 10 April
Join lecturer Melinda Young in the jewellery studio to discover traditional string making and cordage techniques. You will make your own colourful twisted metal bracelet and produce a stamped copper charm to attach to your bracelet using metal stamping techniques.
Tuesday, 11 April
Challenge your ideas of traditional sculpture with lecturer and leading contemporary artist Ramesh Nithiyendran. In this workshop, you will create an impermanent sculpture from found and recycled materials. You will explore themes including figuration, sustainability, composition, colour and form as they exist in contemporary art and creative contexts.
Wednesday, 12 April
Lecturer and textile artist Dr Fabri Blacklock is a specialist in natural environmentally friendly dyes. In this workshop, you will learn the ancient Japanese tradition of shibori dyeing, a resist dyeing method. You will dip your shibori creation into a natural indigo dye pot and watch the magic unfold.
