The Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship for Emerging Artists features work by ten early career contemporary artists. Each year scholarships are awarded to artists to assist with the cost of overseas travel to: undertake formal study; undertake a residency or mentorship; undertake informal study for a planned research project.
This year the Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship Exhibition is curated by Yarran Gatsby who received a Curatorial Scholarship from The Freedman Foundation through the Masters of Curating and Cultural Leadership program at UNSW Art & Design.
The exhibition includes works by the 2018 scholars: Caroline Garcia (NSW and New York), Shireen Taweel (NSW), Lu Forsberg (QLD), Mimi Kind (NSW) and Jimmy Nuttall (VIC) and the returning scholars from 2017: Alice Couttoupes (NSW), Brigette Hart (VIC and England), Olivia Koh (VIC), Anna McMahon (NSW) and Georgia Saxelby (NSW and Washington DC).
The Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship and Curatorial Scholarship are administered by NAVA on behalf of The Freedman Foundation.
To coincide with our Spring season of exhibitions please join us at UNSW Galleries for a series of public programs.
Panel Discussion: In Pursuit: exhibition-making now
Wednesday 24 October 11:30am-1pm
Where do early career and independent, curators fit in to the exhibition-making landscape? In this panel discussion we hear from curators with a range of experiences pursuing definitions of what exhibition-making is, and what it can be.
PANELLISTS: Glenn Barkley, Yarran Gatsby, Nanette Orly, Conor O’Shea, Talia Smith
MODERATOR: Consuelo Cavaniglia
Panel Discussion: Where to from here?
Thursday 25 October 5.30-7pm
'Emerging' and early 'career' are terms that don't speak to a single point in an art career. To start on the road to an art practice doesn't mean an uninterrupted flow - how do artists define themselves as fitting within these descriptions?
PANELLISTS: Chelsea Lehmann, Sophia Kouyoumdjian, Shireen Taweel, Emily Parsons-Lord
MODERATOR: Esther Anatolitis, Executive Director, NAVA
