Lynne Roberts-Goodwin’s exhibition BEYOND THIS POINT engages with navigational satellite and ground research using photographic still–moving imagery & topographical terrain shifts along the northern hemisphere latitude parallel between 37.7 N and 47 N. This recent body of work reflects, challenges & questions peripheral & seemingly remote unintentional landscapes - a concrete or salt production plant or at a larger scale, satellite tracking imagery, aerial balloons, historic ruins or abandoned fields of rusting metal structures - otherworldly narratives or creation myths to other sites, both spatial & temporal. Questioning not just what landscape is but also what landscape is for. Here, within this work, the idea of landscape is interrogated as a series of intersecting material and conceptual terrains promoting wider reflection on the meaning of spatial ambiguity, complexity, and multiplicity. The vital thread that runs through BEYOND THIS POINT, is the tireless search for new and ever-shifting ways of conveying, photographically, the scope of humankind’s uneasy and conflicting relationships and narratives, both above and below the earth.
This has been Roberts-Goodwin’s core conceptual foundation for almost three and a half decades. Research and subsequent still and video projects have taken the artist from the subterranean (sinkholes) of Jordan through to ground levels Dead Sea, Death Valley, Lake Urmia, Iran and Lake Tuz, Turkey (lowest points on earth) and up into the earth’s atmosphere (hot-air balloon) and beyond (collaboration with Satellite Agencies for image capture) and toward the boundaries of the unknown to exquisitely unveil a world where everything remains as it never was.
Lynne Roberts-Goodwin is Honorary Senior Lecturer UNSW A & D and Australian-based artist, whose contemporary visual art research and studio practice addresses critical issues to do with site, place and geopolitical significance and the impact on these of the human and animal bodies. Her photographs explore contemporary and ancient geopolitical trade routes, terrestrial impacts and cultural terrains of contention.
Roberts-Goodwin and her work has been the subject of national and international residencies, fellowship awards and exhibitions within significant cultural institutions, museums and galleries over thirty years. Most recently these have included; ARIA video screening 2020, Midnight Moment, Times Square/Times Square Arts, New York, NY; Tempo Squisito, MUSEO MEà, Asilo dei Creativi di Meano Museum, Meano, Brescia, Italy, Jan/Feb 2020; XII FLORENCE BIENNALE 2019, Fortezza da Basso, Florence, Italy, 2019; Miart Art Fair, Milan, Italy April, 2019; Modern and Contemporary Art Fair, Milan, Italy, April 2018; BIENNALE:11X Biennale Soncino, Marco, Soncino, Italy, Sforza Castle, 2017 & 2019; ART BASEL 1.0, Euroairport Basel Exhibition Platform Gallery, Basel, Switzerland; #navigationalfailure 5x5x5, # Commons: Cartography of Desire, Featured Artist Project, Palermo, Italy, 2017; #navigationalfailure, ABESONexhibit Gallery, Tulsa, USA, 2017; Australia Council for the Arts, American Academy in Rome Affiliated, Mordant Family Fellowship 2017.
