The Bachelor of Media Arts is a ground-breaking degree designed to meet industry demand for creative practitioners and content developers who possess multiple skills and breadth of knowledge across a range of key areas within contemporary creative media.
Working in a studio-based learning environment, you will gain hands on skills complemented by theoretical studies that encourage critical thinking, contextual awareness and innovation.
You will be taught by accomplished, industry-active media artists, producers and theorists and have connections with Australia’s leading research labs in creative robotics, interactive and immersive cinema and 3D Visualisation. Immersed in an innovative, supportive and collaborative learning environment, you will create your projects in workshops, labs and studios that are among the world’s best equipped.
The Bachelor of Media Arts is comprised of three year levels that help you explore a variety of creative approaches and incrementally develop your creative skills and knowledge in media arts.
In your first year, you will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of media, developing key practical and conceptual skills necessary for undertaking independent creative learning
In your second year, you will build on these fundamentals allowing you to focus and gain depth in two or more discipline areas. You will also further develop your contextual understandings through specialised media arts theory courses.
In your third year, you will have the opportunity to synthesise your skills and knowledge in a large-scale, self-initiated project. With complementary studies in professional practice and the option to undertake a professional experience project, your third year focuses on preparing you for transition into industry-based creative practice.
Throughout the Bachelor of Media Arts, you will utilise world-class facilities, workshops and equipment to make and exhibit your media artworks.
The degree features five disciplinary areas, from which you will choose at least two.
In the animation studio, you will develop skills and knowledge in contemporary animation processes, techniques and concepts. By exploring a range of 3D and traditional animation processes as well as conceptual animation and digital compositing, you will acquire techniques and approaches applicable in a wide variety of media arts practices.
Visual Effects (Digital Media)
In the visual effects studio, you will explore the contemporary potentials of animated media. From visual effects to motion capture and encoded media, you will be challenged and engage with new possibilities for digital media practice in a critically-engaged studio context.
In the sound studio, you will create media artworks utilising sound-based techniques and processes. Working in studio and acoustic environments, you will develop skills and knowledge to help you create sound-based media art projects for the gallery, as well as virtual and public spaces.
In the moving image studio, you will explore contemporary approaches to video art, short film, audio-visual composition and installation. You will develop understandings and skills in a variety of creative contexts for moving image practice including gallery, screen, virtual and public spaces.
In the interactive media studio, you will create dynamic and responsive environments and objects in the context of contemporary media arts practice. By exploring an array of interactive and immersive technologies, you will develop innovative approaches to creating mediated and sensorial experiences for a variety of contexts and spaces.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to broaden your skills and knowledge by selecting from a wide range of elective courses from across our art, design and media programs.

Media Arts (Honours) is a one-year program intended for high achieving students who have completed an undergraduate degree in media arts (or similar area), either from UNSW Sydney or another university. The degree allows you to extend your media arts practice by developing a significant practice-led research project in a rigorous and supportive community of practice.
