The Graduate Certificate of Visualisation, Simulation & Immersive Design will equip you to become a future-ready design leader, capable of understanding and meeting the growing demand of immersive practices across a multitude of industries.
The program offers a unique human-centric, design-led approach focusing on human perception and experience. You will learn how, why, when and where to effectively utilise simulation and immersive platforms including VR, AR and MR.
Your learning will engage you with these technologies first-hand as you explore real case studies and gain insights from global leaders. You will develop immersion strategies to tackle specific industry-related problems in your field of interest.
The program caters to the demands of professionals from diverse industry sectors. It can be studied full-time or part-time and is delivered via a range of flexible modalities incorporating online, face-to-face classes and creative studios.
This low residency program has been designed to accommodate busy professionals. The core courses are conducted online, and students attend with two intensive face to face meetups per year on campus or at our industry partner facilities. Students will also have full access to all campus facilities throughout each term. For elective courses, students will be able to select from a range of fully online courses or on campus face to face courses with weekly classes.
As well as the technical side of visualisation and simulation, this unique program helps you understand the principles of human experience to better design appropriate and effective applications of VR, AR and MR technologies to solve contemporary real-world problems such as visualising complex data sets, designing human-robot interactions, rehearsing medical and defence procedures, planning cities, designing creative experiences, researching, experimenting, and training.
Professionals interested in understanding and utilising simulation, visualisation and immersive environments for a variety of industries including: design, cultural heritage, art, entertainment, architecture, health, defence, business, education, and manufacturing.
The program will provide you with the knowledge and skills to take up a range of high-value positions as design leaders, managers, trainers, artists, researchers, planners, analysts, innovators and entrepreneurs in the following industries:
- art, design, and animation
- immersive entertainment and gaming
- education and training
- architecture, social and urban planning
- defence, emergency and national security
- medicine, healthcare, and sports training
- advanced manufacturing
- business and finance
- sustainability and environmental modelling
Applicants are required to have a recognised Bachelors degree with an equivalent of a UNSW 65 weighted average mark (WAM). Given that the program enables practitioners from a wide range of industry sectors to integrate visualisation, simulation and immersive environments into their own work contexts, entry is not dependant upon a degree cognate with the creative disciplines.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be granted for formal, non-formal and workplace learning for specified credit in accordance with UNSW recognition of prior learning procedure. Students may only claim RPL for elective courses within the program (up to a maximum of 12 UOC). RPL will not be considered for core courses. Applying for the Graduate Certificate without a Bachelors degree
If you have at least 5 years of experience working in your industry you can apply for alternate entry into the Graduate Certificate in Visualisation, Simulation and Immersive Design. Given the transdisciplinary nature of the program, your industry experience may be in any discipline, and you do not have to be currently involved with immersive technologies. When submitting your application, you must include a digital portfolio (PDF, website, etc.) containing the following:
- A CV detailing at least 5 years industry experience.
- 5-10 examples of your professional achievements (examples of work, one page descriptions of initiatives you have led, patents, awards, etc.)
- A two page statement which explains:
- Your specific strengths and achievements in your field
- How you see visualisation, simulation and immersive design impacting your discipline
- Your motivations for joining the program, and how you believe the program will enhance your career
The portfolio will be assessed by Art & Design staff who will be looking to see that you have expertise in your current field, a passion to learn more about immersion and simulation, and ideas about how this program will benefit your future.

Master of Visualisation, Simulation & Immersive Design
This 1.7 year program will equip you with analytical and philosophical understandings of immersive practices and technologies to empower you as a leader and driver of workforce change.
Typically 1-5 days in length, our micro-credentialled short courses enable practitioners to quickly learn the latest technologies, skill sets and competencies they need to meet growing demand. Courses can be face-to-face or online, at any time over the year. They can also be recognised as credit towards to Graduate Certificate or Masters degeees.
