The brief

To create a portfolio of 6 to 8 works, some self-guided and some prescribed by the course. The resultant portfolio was intended to showcase development from the first core studio, aided by the other design studios and any other courses.

Student reflection

Studying a degree in Design and Commerce, I aimed to incorporate both fields into my portfolio, creating a series of product designs that explore the relationship between culture and consumption.

Through the appropriation of cultural designs and crafts in a culturally-ambiguous manner, my portfolio blurs cultural boundaries, expressing the impacts of globalisation due to commercialisation and consumerism.

My strength is 3D Visualisation, so I heavily reiterated my radio created in that studio. Bearing a Scandinavian design style, I created a manual that both demonstrated my process but also acted as a parody of Ikea's instruction manuals for its products. I created advertisements for the radio, refining my rendering skills and enjoying it very much along the way.

Samantha Tsang is a first year student in the Bachelor of Design / Bachelor of Commerce.

This project was created for the final assessment in the course 'Design Studio 2 – Design Communication'.
