Gabrielle Finnane is a lecturer in environmental media and contemporary Asian media art. She does interdisciplinary research on walking as a creative practice, and on the history, practice and poetics of the moving image. Her current project draws on ecocriticism to discuss place-making and locality in documentary installation and art film in the Asia-Pacific region.
She has previously published criticism and reviews of avant-garde film, video art and Asian cinema, and essays on the representation of Asia in Australian films and on film adaptations. As a media artist, she has worked with 16mm film, Super 8, video. Her narrative film I, Eugenia received the 1998 Dendy award for Australian Short Film (General). She has done several art projects in/on the Philippines: a photographic exhibition on liminal places (2004); a landscape video (2010); a collaborative installation on Cold War networks in Southeast Asia (with R. Nery & S. Tse) If on a Tropic Night (2010); and, as producer, two feature-length documentary essays (both writer/director Robert Nery): Black Nazarene (2003) and In 1966 The Beatles Came to Manila (2010).
